The days of buying a chalet, listing it on Airbnb, and forgetting about it are over. As of 2026, regulations in the Gunnison Valley have fragmented into three distinct "jurisdictions"—each with drastically different rules for investors.

A property on one side of the street might be a cash-flow machine, while a nearly identical home across the street is legally prohibited from hosting a single guest.

This guide breaks down the 2026 regulatory landscape to help you buy with eyes wide open.

Zone 1: The Town of Crested Butte (The "Restricted" Zone)

Best for: Lifestyle buyers who want to live downtown part-time. Worst for: Pure ROI investors.

The Town of Crested Butte (the historic downtown grid) has the strictest regulations in the valley. The town operates under a two-tier licensing system:

1. The "Unlimited" License (The Golden Ticket)

What it is: Allows you to rent the property for an unlimited number of nights per year.

Early autumn is an ideal time to drive some of Colorado’ scenic routes to take in colorful views of changing foliage. For iconic journeys along Independence Pass, Trail Ridge Road, and Kebler Pass, pack a picnic, make a playlist, and hit the road to enjoy these classic drives.

Kebler Pass (Crested Butte – Paonia)

Surrounded by the largest aspen grove in North America, Kebler Pass is a stunning drive in the late summer and early fall when the leaves turn gold. There are dispersed camping options along the route between Crested Butte and Paonia, as well as trailheads for hiking and biking. Most of the trek is unpaved, so take your time and enjoy the views.

Fuel up at Paradise Cafe if you’re starting the day in Crested Butte, with Huevos Rancheros, Eggs Paradise or French Toast before you begin the drive. If your morning begins in Paonia, pop into Paonia Breadworks for coffee and a pastry.

Independence Pass (Twin Lakes – Aspen)

With winding switchbacks, steep drop-offs, and sweeping views of the surrounding peaks, this gorgeous section of Highway 82 between Twin Lakes and Aspen is not for the faint of heart. A few sections are only one lane, so bring your patience and drive courteously. There’s a trail at the peak of the pass, which is an ideal spot to stretch your legs, walk your dog on-leash, and take photos.

With a flat out-and-back hike around 4.4 miles, the Interlaken Trail which begins near the Twin Lakes dam gives you a glimpse at the abandoned Interlaken Resort on the shores of the lake as well as lovely views of the water and aspens.

Trail Ridge Road (Rocky Mountain National Park)

As the highest continuous paved road in the United States, with almost 50 miles of incredible views between Estes Park and Grand Lake, Trail Ridge Road soars to 12,183 feet of elevation and crosses the Continental Divide at Milner Pass. From this unique vantage point, elk, pika, and marmots are often seen, and views range from forest to lush meadows to tundra above the treeline.

Allow plenty of time to stop and take in the sights, and bring extra layers of clothing as temperatures can drop 20-30 degrees from the entrances of Rocky Mountain National Park to the highest elevation.

Guanella Pass Scenic Byway (Georgetown – Grant)

Located just an hour from Denver, this drive ascends to over 11,000 feet, granting vistas of Mount Bierstadt, Gray’s Peak, and Torrey’s Peak. Leaves in this region typically change in late September to early October.

Allow time to hike the Silver Dollar and Murray Lake Trail or plan a stop at the Georgetown Loop Railroad for a fun and historic excursion.

Cache la Poudre Scenic Byway (Fort Collins – Walden)

Cutting through the canyon along the Cache la Poudre River, this 101-mile route meanders from Fort Collins to Walden. As one of the only waterways in the country with that’s been designated as a Wild and Scenic River, its challenging whitewater is renowned by kayakers and rafters.

Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep in the canyon, and bring your fly rod to cast for rainbow trout as well.

Peak to Peak Scenic Byway (Estes Park – Black Hawk)

With 55 miles snaking along the Front Range, Colorado’s oldest scenic byway leads the way through golden aspen groves, charming small towns, and adventurous excursions in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Stroll the charming town of Estes Park and enjoy a meal at Park Tavern before exploring the Stanley Hotel which inspired Stephen King’s The Shining. Legend has it that ghosts roam the halls!

San Juan Skyway

Traversing 236 miles through the southwestern Colorado towns of Durango, Telluride, Ouray, and Silverton, this route has been designated a National Forest Scenic Byway and Colorado Scenic and Historic Byway. The Million Dollar Highway is one section between Ouray and Silverton on Route 550, with sharp turns and a climb over 11,000 feet on Red Mountain Pass.

Stop for lunch in Ouray at the Goldbelt Bar & Grill, for fresh salads, pizza, and drinks before exploring the historic town and hiking at the Box Cañon Falls Park.

As summer heats up, Colorado boasts a variety of places to head for the hills – or mountains – and chill out in lakes, rivers, and swimming spots. From scenic swimming holes to charming high-altitude towns, we’ve got you covered when the mercury starts to rise.

Grand Lake lives up to its name as the largest natural lake in Colorado. Spread across over 500 acres near Rocky Mountain National Park, its sandy beach and cool waters beckon boaters, paddle boarders, and anyone looking for a refreshing spot to enjoy the water, with a photo-worth backdrop of snow-capped peaks.

Located in southern Park County, Paradise Cove can be reached via a half-mile hike along West Four Mile Creek to arrive at a swimming hole where the water has carved a pool surrounded by rocky cliffs. There is a $6 day use fee and visitors must pack out all trash and keep dogs on leash.

If you’re looking for a place to beat the heat in Boulder, the Boulder Creek is easily accessible from Eben Fine Park near Arapahoe Avenue. Some people prefer to float in tubes downstream while others just wade and splash in the creek near the park. Early season water levels are typically higher due to snowmelt, so check on the currents and water levels to ensure it’s safe to tube.

Located at an elevation of 13,420 feet, Pacific Tarn is the highest permanent lake in the United States and a scenic destination – if you’re willing to put in the effort for a challenging hike. Start at the Quandary Peak/McCollough Gulch trailhead near Breckenridge for the 12.3 mile loop that will earn you a refreshing dip in this high alpine lake after. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen, dress in layers, and keep an eye on weather as conditions in the high country change quickly. Once you’re at the lake, relax and enjoy incredible vistas of the Tenmile Range.

Many high-altitude Colorado towns offer a break from the heat, along with lovely scenery, charming ambiance, and plenty of activities.

Ouray is known as the Switzerland of America due to the rugged snow-capped San Juan mountains that surround this stunning destination in southwestern Colorado. Stroll the pedestrian-friendly downtown with shops and restaurants or hike the Perimeter Trail, visit Cascade Falls , dip your toes in the streams, or soak in the natural hot springs after a day of adventure

Leadville is perched at 10,200 feet, and the cooler mountain air is a welcome respite during summer months. With Victorian architecture paying homage to the town’s long history and easy access to Twin Lakes and Turquoise Lake, you can see why this is a desirable stop for summer roadtrippers. Hope Pass, Windsor Lake Trail and sections of the famed Colorado Trail are all near town, and after a day of hiking, you can kick back at one of the charming restaurants on Harrison Avenue.

Silverton is situated at 9,318 feet and is best known as a stop on the iconic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which winds through rugged mountains in the Weminuche Wilderness. This scenic railroad runs from May to October for hikers, backpackers, and sightseers.

Browns Canyon National Monument

Browns Canyon National Monument was carved out by the Arkansas River. As one of the nation’s most popular destinations for whitewater rafting, it is also a favorite spot for fishing, wildlife watching, camping, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, rock climbing, and hiking. Located outside Salida, it is about a two-hour drive from Colorado Springs. Marvel at the beauty of the surrounding fourteeners and take in the scenic vistas.

Chimney Rock National Monument

Take a Walk: Scenic Hikes, Strolls & Snowshoe Treks

Whether you are searching for a gorgeous snowshoe destination in the high country, a challenging trail to hike with the sun on your shoulders, or a leisurely walk, Colorado has beautiful trails throughout the state. Spring is a fantastic time to enjoy nature, as mountain communities still have snow-covered scenery and the Front Range begins to feel more like spring with warmer temperatures. Here are some of the top spots to explore across the state.

Boulder

Chautauqua Park

Ask any local in Boulder for hiking recommendations and you’re likely to hear a suggestion of Chautauqua Park Trailhead. Located along Baseline Road, this park has been preserved since 1898. Without leaving town, you can enjoy access to a trail system with gorgeous views of the iconic Flatirons. Stop by the Ranger Cottage when you arrive for maps and tips on which trails to enjoy that day.

Located west of Boulder, Betasso Preserve has gently sloped terrain with expansive views of the foothills for a beautiful walking or hiking destination. Trails include Canyon Loop, which is 3.3 miles, and Benjamin Loop, which is 2.4 miles, as well as shorter options.

Colorado Springs

Garden of the Gods

With towering rock formations that reach over 300 feet tall, Garden of the Gods is a stunning landmark near Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak with over 21 miles of hiking trails. Each morning at 10:30, meet at the Visitor and Nature Center for a 45 – 60 minute guided walk along the Gateway Trail and Central Garden Trail while learning about the park.

With a canyon that’s chiseled 1,000 feet deep into the granite and North Cheyenne Creek running through the valley, North Cheyenne Cañon Park offers an extensive trail system with challenging terrain across its 1,600 acres. This area features a canyon that’s chiseled 1,000 feet deep into the granite for spectacular views and North Cheyenne Creek running through the bottom of the canyon. St. Mary’s Fall s is a 5.9-mile out and back hike that winds through Buffalo Canyon and culminates on a 300-foot waterfall.

Crested Butte

Town Ranch

In the East Side Trails area of the Nordic Center , Town Ranch is a flat loop that’s easy to navigate for beginners. Keep an eye out for Nordic skiers as this is a well-traveled area. Dogs are permitted on this trail

If you want to bring your four-legged companion along for a snowshoe, the Pooch’s Paradise trail is part of the Nordic Center trail system near the Butte Avenue trailhead. With a base elevation of 8,900 feet, it is a 1.9-mile loop that winds around Peanut Lake with lovely views of the surrounding mountains. Note that passes are needed for dogs to enjoy this trail.

Denver

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre is renowned as a music venue, with concerts planned for Summer 2025 including Sting, Leon Bridges, and James Taylor. The park also provides lots of trails for hiking and its location in Morrison west of Denver is easily accessible. The Trading Post Trail is a scenic loop that showcases stunning red rock formations and ideal for mild March weather.

If you’re looking for an easy hike in the southern part of the Denver Metro, Deer Creek Canyon Loop
is a 2-7-mile loop near Littleton. It’s near the entrance to the canyon and offers about 550 feet of elevation gain with lovely views of the surrounding foothills. Dogs are allowed on leash on this loop that’s a combination of the Meadowlark Trail and Plymouth Creek Trail.

Summit County

Sapphire Point Overlook

With outstanding views of Dillon Reservoir, the Sapphire Point Overlook Trail near Frisco is open year-round. It’s only 0.6 miles for a quick jaunt on snowshoes or hiking in summer and fall but can get icy in spots during winter months.

Summit County Rec Path

Offering 8 miles of groomed trails, the Summit County Rec path is a wonderful pace to traverse multiple areas that link Keystone, Dillon, Frisco, and Silverthorne. Check the latest rec path conditions on the County website.

Vail Valley

Davos Trail

This trail can be enjoyed throughout the year, for snowshoeing in winter and early spring months or hiking after the snow melts. Capture photos of surrounding mountains from this 5.7-mile trek that’s considered moderately challenging. Dogs are allowed but must be on leash. Make sure to check signage as elk closures will impact this area in late spring and early summer.

The Walking Mountains Science Center campus in Avon hosts complimentary snowshoe tours with a naturalist to learn about the flora and fauna of Eagle County. Register online to secure your spot. Tours are from 2:00 – 3:00pm on Mondays through Saturdays. Dress in cold weather gear.

Telluride

Bear Creek Trail

For year-round trekking, Bear Creek Trail is a wonderful choice to wind through the Uncompahgre National Forest whether you are snowshoeing, hiking, or even or horseback. Stop for a photo with the 80-foot Bear Creek Falls in the background.

Telluride River Trail

For a mellow walk, this trail runs along the San Miguel River to the iconic Bridal Veil Falls, one of Telluride’s most beloved landmarks. It’s 4.1 miles out and back and provides access to the river as well as the kids’ fishing ponds.

Winter Park

Jim Creek Trail

This moderate trail is popular with snowshoers as well as hikers once the snow recedes. It’s a 6.9-mile journey with a gradual slope resulting in 1,100 feet of elevation gain and beautiful views of the creek it runs alongside.

Snow Mountain Ranch

The Nordic Center at Snow Mountain Ranch has gear rentals available and over 75 miles of trails to explore across its 5,100 acres. Purchase a trail pass at the Nordic Center if you’re a visitor; overnight guests and members receive complimentary access.

As spring begins, take some time to discover the many trails across the Centennial State. It’s a wonderful way to become more familiar with nature, and Colorado’s varied landscape offers an wide variety of options.

With fall bringing cooler temperatures across Colorado, it’s an ideal time to hit the road to enjoy hot springs across the state.

Strawberry Park Hot Springs

Located 7 miles from Steamboat Springs, Strawberry Park Hot Springs is nestled in a dense forest, providing serenity in a beautiful mountain landscape. Surrounded by towering evergreens with the soothing sounds of streams that feed into the springs, this is an ideal destination if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle.

There are guest cabins, a caboose, covered wagon, and camping options on site for a fun, rustic experience. Adult guests staying on property can access the hot springs after sunset. Note that from November 1st to May 1st, a four-wheel drive vehicle with snow tires is required to access Strawberry Park.

Farm Visits for Fruit & Foraging for Wild Mushrooms

A favorite summer tradition is to pick your own produce at the many farms across Colorado. Whether you prefer to select delicious peaches, plums, or local berries, we’ve rounded up some tips and locations. Or try your hand at foraging for wild mushrooms, from morels to chanterelles, to enjoy in a variety of recipes.

Green Barn Fruit Company, Palisade

Palisade, located on the Western Slope near Grand Junction, is known for its yearly bounty of delicious stone fruits. Green Barn Fruit Company offers a picturesque setting for visits.

The orchard offers seasonal U-pick options daily through the end of September, so you can enjoy the experience of harvesting your own pie cherries, apricots, and peaches. Call ahead to confirm hours and which fruits are in peak season. Groups of 10 or more should make advance reservations.

Big B’s Orchard, Hotchkiss

Located on 30 acres, Big B’s has become a destination for camping and concerts in addition to seasonal produce and handcrafted juices and ciders. Stop by to pick your own produce, enjoy a meal at the café, and stay overnight in their campground.

Check the event calendar for upcoming concerts in the orchard as well as Cider Fest in October.

Heckmann Hollow, Fowler

Opened in 2018, this expansive farm has over 1,000 apple, plum, and peach trees and a 3,000-square-foot garden with herbs and vegetables, located 40 minutes east of Pueblo.

No reservations are required to pick your own fruits and veggies or cut flowers. There is also a bakery on-site with homemade pies, cookies, and muffins made from the farm’s produce.

Adam’s Apple Orchard, Ault

If you’re in the mood for delicious local apples, Adam’s Apple Orchard features many varieties throughout the growing season as well as pumpkins and other fall produce.

Pick your own produce on Saturdays and Sundays and make sure to stop by their Country Store for jam, jelly, salsa, and more!

Berry Patch Farms, Brighton

Berry Patch Farms is a family-friendly environment with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. They provide containers for produce and tables so you can bring your own picnic.

Arrive in the morning to beat the heat and make sure to wear closed-toe shoes and bring a hat, sunscreen, and bug spray. Leave your pets at home as this is a working farm with animals and equipment. Check the website for hours and upcoming special events at the farm.

Foraging for Wild Mushrooms

Colorado is estimated to be home to almost 5,000 species of mushrooms, so if you’re hoping to add some gourmet mushrooms to your dishes, it’s an ideal area to start foraging.

The San Juan Mountains in Southwestern Colorado offer the right habitats for different mushroom species. Summer is the best time to search for morels, while fall is best for chanterelles and porcini. Morels are typically found alongside rivers or in fields, often near cottonwood trees and other plants.

The Mount Evans Wilderness area has a unique combination of meadows and alpine forests that make it a great locale to search for mushrooms. Often found near the root systems of trees, especially after rain storms, most edible mushroom species have a toxic lookalike, so double-check before consuming. Bring a mushroom guidebook or download an identification app to make sure you’re selecting edible varieties. It’s a great idea to venture out with a local expert who’s familiar with fungi to know what to forage.

Foraging etiquette and sustainability are very important; always leave some mushrooms in their habitat for the health of the ecosystem and the next forager. Do your research to find out if a permit is needed and if foraging is allowed in specific areas.

Destination: Colorado Cool Off in July

Splash into summer with stops at scenic Colorado lakes, and cool off at some of the top ice cream shops on your journey.

Boulder Reservoir

Just 15 minutes from downtown, the Boulder Reservoir is a 700-acre lake that’s ideal for swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Known locally as “the Rez,” there is also a beach for sunbathing and a 5.3-mile loop for walking, jogging, or hiking on the Boulder Reservoir Loop Trail.

After an invigorating afternoon, stop by Sweet Cow for a scoop of their small batch, hand crafted ice cream. Locally made in Colorado, they have locations in South Boulder and North Boulder with flavors rotating regularly. Favorites include Coconut Cream Pie, Fruity Pebbles, and Golden Oreo and they have several vegan options.

Cherry Creek Reservoir

This 880-acre reservoir is flanked by green hills and offers easy access to boating, fishing, rowing, and sailing, located just east of the Denver Tech Center at the northeast end of Cherry Creek State Park. The sandy beach is open during summer months for sunbathing and swimming.

The Cherry Creek Reservoir Loop Trail is 6.7 miles long and circles the reservoir for walking and jogging. Dogs are not permitted on this trail so leave your four-legged friends at home.

There is also a 107-acre fenced off-leash dog area with water access as well. Visitors must have a DOLA pass and dogs must be under voice control when off-leash.

Sloan’s Lake

Located in Northwest Denver, Sloan’s Lake Park’s 290 acres are bordered by the neighborhood of Edgewater and West Highlands. The lake is surrounded by a path for walkers and joggers vith views of the Denver skyline and mountains to the west.

The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival is hosted here each July, with 50 teams racing across the water, as well as an Asian marketplace, art demonstrations, Asian food courts, and more.

Edgewater Marketplace is just blocks away with over 20 options for food and drink, including Happy Cones , a New Zealand-style creamery.

Lake Dillon

Perched at an elevation of 9,017 feet, Lake Dillon, also known as Dillon Reservoir , is a high alpine lake boasting gorgeous views of the peaks of the Ten Mile Range. It’s surrounded by the towns of Dillon, Silverthorne, and Frisco. Whether you are sailing, stand-up paddle boarding, or enjoying a walk or jog around the lake, the vistas are spectacular.

The Dillon Marina offers pontoon, sailboat, stand-up paddle boards, and kayak rentals, as well as sailing lessons. The Dillon Yacht Club hosts racing regattas as well.

After an invigorating day on the water, kick back with snacks and drinks at Pug Ryan’s Lakeside Tiki Bar. Stroll down charming Main Street in Frisco and enjoy a scoop from I Scream Gelato. With over 70 rotating flavors, favorites include Ferrero Rocher, Dulce de Leche, Wild Berry Sorbet, and Crème Brûlée.

Hanging Lake

The colorful water of Hanging Lake is a frequently photographed location in Glenwood Canyon. To arrive at the lake, hikers must tackle a steep, rocky trail of 1.2 miles with 1,200 feet of elevation gain. Make sure to bring plenty of water, wear sturdy hiking shoes, and use the restroom at the trailhead as there are no facilities at the lake. Leave your dogs at home as no animals are permitted on the trail.

To preserve the natural beauty of the lake, no swimming or walking on the log bridge is allowed. Permits are required for hikers in advance of visiting Hanging Lake. Reservations become available weekly, with hiking dates and times released each Tuesday at 8am.

After a strenuous hike with gorgeous scenery, stop by Sundae in Glenwood Spring s for a scoop of artisan, small batch ice cream, a milkshake or one of their famous sundaes. Located on historic Grand Avenue, all ice cream is handmade on site and rotating flavors include Salted Cookies & Cream, Espresso, and Sweet Cream.

FLY FISHING

Boulder Creek, beloved by anglers as an easily accessible waterway, offers plenty of spots to seek out brown and rainbow trout. Summit County’s Blue River provides exceptional trout fishing year-round. In April, as the river comes alive with hatches of blue-winged olives and midges, anglers can test their skills against wily trout.

Crested Butte is an angler’s paradise, with rivers and alpine lakes to explore. The Gunnison River, just outside of town, offers great options for trout fishing. Warmer weather in April typically brings hatches of blue-winged olives and stoneflies.

The Blue River starts on Hoosier Pass, winding through the Summit County towns of Silverthorne and Breckenridge, with exceptional trout fishing throughout the year for those hardy enough to brave its cold temperatures. In April, the waterway comes alive with hatches of midges.

In the rugged San Juan Mountains, Telluride offers outstanding fly fishing surrounded by towering peaks. The San Miguel River, which flows outside Telluride and along the Uncompaghre Plateau, is known for its crystal-clear waters. Spring typically means the start of warmer temperatures and increased insect activity, making it an excellent time to explore the river’s pools in search of rainbow and brown trout.

GOLF

Colorado’s 300+ days of sunshine each year make golf a year-round sport across many locations. Although high-elevation courses in Crested Butte, Grand County, Summit County, Telluride, and the Vail Valley are still covered in snow, some downvalley courses open in mid-April. Eagle Ranch Golf Club , an Arnold Palmer Signature Design course just 30 minutes from the resorts of Beaver Creek and Vail, opens for the season on April 10th and offers tee times available to the public.

With a championship layout in a unique setting, Arrowhead Golf Course was 300 million years in the making. Drastic elevation changes, plenty of wildlife and thousands of feet of ancient red sandstone rocks with towering peaks above fairways offer golfers a majestic experience. It’s easy to see why this is one of the most photographed golf courses in the world.

Another beautiful golf course on the Front Range is TCP Colorado . Located in the Heron Lakes community north of Denver in Berthoud, this championship golf course was designed by Arthur Schaupeter Golf Course Architects. There are plenty of water views with Lonetree, McNeil and Welch Reservoirs alongside the course, and broad mountain views abound.

HIKING

As the snow melts and warmer days are seen across the Front Range, it’s a great time to dust off your hiking shoes. Spruce Mountain , located near Larkspur and Palmer Lake, is a 5.5 mile loop that provides views of Pikes Peak and the Palmer Divide. Wildflowers are abundant in the spring and summer, and the trial allows horseback riding, so keep dogs on leash and your eyes peeled for riders.

Roxborough State Park , outside of Denver, offers almost 4,000 acres to explore. Some of the notable options include Fountain Valley Trail, which is fairly flat and just over 2 miles with impressive rock outcroppings, and the more challenging Elk Valley Trail, a 4.8 mile loop with lookout points to search for elk in the meadows. Dogs are not allowed in the park, and make sure to leave no trace – pack out any trash to keep the trails beautiful.

Located just west of downtown Boulder, Mount Sanitas is a popular hike for locals and visitors alike. It can be done as a mellow walk near a brook, or the most challenging option with a steep incline to the peak offering 360-degree views of Boulder and the Front Range. Parking is a challenge due to its proximity to Boulder, so plan to arrive early or carpool.

Legendary Women In Colorado History

Colorado has hundreds of legendary women who have shaped its history – from suffragettes and pioneers in the rugged mining days, lawmakers and policy shapers, and trailblazers in industries such as medicine and technology.

To commemorate Women’s History Month, we are highlighting some of the strong women who have left their mark on the Centennial State.

Madeleine Albright grew up in Denver, attending the Kent School, where she founded the school’s international relations club. She studied at Wellesley College and received her Masters and PhDs from Columbia University and was a professor of diplomacy at Georgetown University.

She served as a representative to the United Nations from 1993-1997, and she was the 64th Secretary of State beginning in 1997, becoming the first female Secretary of State in U.S. history. She was a defender of human rights and a vocal proponent of democracy and the environment. She wrote four New York Times best sellers.

Kristi Anseth has made significant strides in the field of biomedical engineering. She’s a researcher and inventor, with 17 patents resulting from her discoveries in cell biology.

Anseth is best known for her advances in combining molecular and cellular biology with engineering to develop substitutes for tissue, to help various parts of the body heal faster. She received a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado, where she was named a Distinguished Professor in 2008.

Amache Ochinee Prowers , also known as Walking Woman, was born in 1846. She was a member of the Southern Cheyenne tribe and lived on Colorado’s southeastern plains.

After her father, Cheyenne Peace Chief Ochonee, was killed at the Sand Creek Massacre, Amache worked to bridge the cultural gaps between Native Americans and European settlers. She testified before Congress about the massacre, and she was given 640 acres of land as reparations. On that land along the Arkansas River, Amache and her husband John Wesley Prowers worked together to manage their cattle operation as well as a 14-room lodge and mercantile on the Santa Fe Trail while raising ten children.

Helen Ring Robinson was the first woman to be elected to the Colorado Senate in 1912 and she was a champion for workers’ rights and women’s rights. She had success in getting a bill passed for a minimum wage for female workers.

Robinson was a vocal supporter of the suffrage movement, the ability of women to serve on juries, and worker’s safety, particularly in the mining industry. An esteemed writer and speaker, she taught at Colorado College before turning her focus to advocacy.

Josephine Aspinwall Roche attended Vassar College and earned a Master’s degree in sociology from Columbia University. Her father was an executive with Rocky Mountain Fuel, a coal mining company. When she inherited his stock and took over the company, she championed higher pay and better working conditions for miners, paying her workers the highest wages ever seen for mining laborers.

She was the first female police officer in Denver, and also served as Deputy Sheriff. President Franklin Roosevelt appointed her to lead the National Public Health Service, the second American woman to ever serve in a Presidential Cabinet.

Through advocacy, innovation, and determination, these women have helped pave the way for generations of Colorado females by changing the course of women’s rights, worker’s safety, policy, and medicine.
